This has always made the most sense to me characterization-wise, too.

Not so sure that I am grateful to be given that big chunk of exposition like that. Struggle up a mountain and get told the key parts of the story by some guy who I haven’t seen before and may not see again. Probably could have been done better.
And he sent me to that cave without a warning about the plant monster too!
On the flip side of things, I felt like it gave a sense of how far-reaching and deeply ingrained the problem is that you’re trying to solve, when you have to struggle to reach an ancient elf to even tell you about what’s really going on because he’s the only one left in the world who even knows the whole story. I suppose this exposition could have been given by Kratos or Yuan to get the emotional impact of their side of the story, but adding the interaction with the elves and their storyteller does more to build on the world and showcases how everyone, even the people who think they’re above it all, have been impacted by Mithos’ actions. It also adds another side to the conflicts, that up to this point are between Tethe’alla and Sylvarant, and between humans and half-elves. Even if that side is full of stuck-up, racist, isolationist jerks, it’s another perspective that we previously didn’t know existed.
(I should possibly point out at this point that I’ve been roleplaying as Yuan for close to five years, and therefore have many feelings on elves, half-elves, and the conflicts thereof. It’s also a reason I’ve been quiet up to this point, despite watching this blog fairly consistently - most of my deepest feelings are related to spoilery things, and you’ve finally hit the biggest of the spoilers I was avoiding talking about.)
And honestly, as someone who plays in the fandom, any world-building the writers decided to do is appreciated, given how many holes remain once that world-building is finished.
Sending you to fight the plant monster without a warning was still a dick move, though. The Storyteller is less awful and irritating than the rest of the elves, but that doesn’t make him likable.

IT JUST GOT REAL
What good news for the world.
Remember when this made the news weeks ago and US news outlets didn’t find it worth reporting?
BLESS THIS
This should have like, 1,000% more notes.
This is amazing.
Are you telling me that those Ryan Gosling cupcakes have 45,000 notes and this post hasn’t even reached 5,000?
Relevant.
And it was on this day that this appeared on my dash, and I said “Damn, finally some good news!” and reblogged the hell out of it.

Telling George the good news. He still hasn’t volunteered to take his blame. He’s an uppity devil too. Who does he think is in charge here? No respect for his boss. Regal and Presea should give George a good chopping too!
This was one of my major pet peeves about that part of the game as well. Actually, a lot of Regal and Presea’s arc and development felt half-finished. No proper closure with Vharley by allowing us a boss fight. (I don’t know anyone who didn’t feel a little cheated by not getting to kick his ass themselves.) No acknowledgment that George was equally guilty in Alicia’s death. Presea getting more character development through optional sidequests than she does through the main plot. It’s a bit disappointing, because I find more interest in mature characters than in idealist heroes, much of the time, but this is primarily the story of Lloyd, Colette, Sheena and Zelos.
Leaves plenty of room for speculation and perspective-shifted fanfic, though, which I am more than happy to provide.

I’ve had a couple of comments from people about me developing a dislike for Raine and calling her a bully.
I’ll explain here why I have a problem with her actions in the game and if that fires off some debate it’s a good thing.
I had a problem with this during my first playthrough, too. It was hard, because Raine’s violence was clearly supposed to be comedic according to the tone of the game when it was going on, but it didn’t come off that way to me. Being experienced with anime tropes made some instances more forgivable than others, but in the grand scheme of things I didn’t enjoy it.
It was also hard because I identified strongly with Raine (much more so than with Lloyd or Colette), which made it more irritating when she did something I so wholly disagreed with. In the end, I decided not to allow the writers’ poor decision-making and/or inconsistent values to diminish my affection for the character, but I still wince at those scenes, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt that way.
(As a side note, I’m not sure of Tumblr etiquette enough to know if this is the best way to respond, but if there is to be discussion, it seems best to me for it to be open and public. And if I find it a relief to know that I’m not alone feeling that the violence was out of place, others might feel the same as well.)
It’s funny, because I’m sort of the opposite. I like Guy/Jade because Guy has so much inner darkness that he has to hide or tuck away around everyone else. I notice that it’s almost always in interaction with Jade when Guy’s really snarky side comes out, and there’s a few moments in the game where we really see Guy being bitter and angry. The peace treaty signing and the curse slot are the most obvious, but I think my favorite is on the Jewel of Gardios sidequest. He points out that the sword hanging on the wall at the Fabre manor used to belong to his family, and Luke says it must have been hard seeing that every day. Guy says - totally casual here - that no, actually it kept him going - he was planning to use that in his revenge. …In other words, what kept him going for years was the idea of taking a sword off the wall and killing everybody with it. Reformed or not, those kind of thinking patterns don’t just vanish.
This got long-winded, but that’s basically why I like the idea that Jade provides a space where Guy can just say what he thinks without worrying about hurting people’s feelings. Even provides an example of how to do it, and object lessons in how people will walk right over you if you don’t, sometimes. (“Guy, explain.”) It’s really a fascinating dynamic.
